Alexandra. An unusual name. But a fitting choice for this woman. He remembered vaguely that Alexander had been the name of Scottish kings, as well as the name of the great Greek conqueror.

Dominic steered her past a couple who were almost sta-tionary in the middle of the floor, while the gentleman planted kisses on the lady’s temple. Dominic longed to do the same.

But not here. Not in front of this vast audience. Not in that vulgar way. His Alexandra was a lady. She was not to be treated like a member of the muslin company. Away from the ballroom, however…

He knew a sudden urge to find a secluded spot. Surely there must be one in this vast place?

He waited until the music ended, for it would have been too obvious to take her from the floor in the middle of the dance.

‘You look a little warm, Alexandra,’ he said, putting an arm behind her back to usher her towards the door. ‘There are refreshments in the garden, I believe, and illuminations, too. And no doubt it is much cooler there. Shall we join the throng outdoors and pass an opinion on the merits of the regimental bands?’ He hoped he was managing to keep the desire out of his voice, to sound merely polite, and considerate of her comfort.

She was fanning herself enthusiastically. And she was glowing from the effort and the exhilaration of waltzing for what had seemed like hours. Dominic had refused to let her leave the floor, or to dance with any other man. One masked Guards officer had tried to cut Dominic out, but the man had slunk away after receiving a few pithy words of advice about how he might mend his manners. Rather than being shocked, Alexandra had simply laughed at Dominic’s caustic wit, melting back into his arms and into the rhythm of the waltz without a murmur of protest. It had been as if they were the only couple on the floor. At least, so it had been for Dominic.
